Navigation Tutorial
The Navigation Tutorial shown on this page can be considered an "Entry Level" tutorial, i.e. it deals with some basics in order to help a newcomer getting started.
Most of us take the basics for granted, forgetting that they were often difficult to get hold of when we were new at it ourselves. This includes moving and resizing a window, and right clicking a link, for example.
A window resizing part is included in Step 1 in order to be able to work with two windows that remain visible in one screen at the same time.
Should a window disappear, then click on its title in the task bar at the bottom of your screen to make it visible (active) again.
Before doing anything at all, it is best to read a paragraph or section in its entirety.

Step 1 : Resizing the Welcome Page window
Before starting the Tutorial, reduce the width of your Welcome Page window* by pulling its left border to the right. Next, move this tutorial window to the left of your screen.
You will end up having 2 parallel windows : a narrow window with this tutorial to the left and a wider window with the Welcome Page in it to the right.

* Once you have the two windows lined up, proceed to Step 2. Navigation Tutorial (click link). If you don't know how to do it, read the sections that follow.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
(a) Moving a window
Move your mouse over the top part of this tutorial window, the part that is blue (the blue color indicates that the window is active). Depress the left side of your mouse and keep it depressed and move your mouse. You will see that you can move the window right, down, left or up. Move it to about the middle of your screen.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
(b) Narrowing the Welcome Page
You can reduce the Welcome Page window with your mouse pointer as follows : slowly move your mouse pointer over the Welcome Page to the far left of your screen. When you reach the window left border, and start moving the pointer over that border, the single mouse arrow changes into a horizontal double headed arrow (you will only see the right arrow).
When that happens, depress the left side of your mouse and keep it depressed. Now slowly move your mouse to the right. You will lose sight of your tutorial window for just a few moments. Continue until you see the tutorial window reappear.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next, move the tutorial window as far as possible to the left. The Welcome Page should be positioned to the far right. If it isn't, then move it there now. If there is too much space between the two windows, then widen the Welcome Page window by pulling its left border to the left.
You end up having 2 parallel windows : a narrow window with this tutorial to the left and a wider window with the Welcome page in it to the right. Both remain visible even if you move the scroll bar in either window.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 2 : Navigation Tutorial
In this tutorial I will walk you through the steps required to access and retrieve the site's principal pages and subjects, see some images and understand when it is useful to open a page or an image into a new window.
Note that every subject on this site is shown in the type of menu boxes you see here (gold colored with red border).
1. Introductory Pages
2. Medieval Byzantine Icons
3. Contemporary Byzantine Icons

Take a moment now and move your mouse pointer over the menu boxes, i.e. over the real boxes on the Welcome page, right underneath the iconostasis. Hover it over box 2 'Medieval Byzantine Icons', for example. You see the top part turn red? Now move your mouse pointer over the first line underneath it, the one that reads 'Overview of Contents'. You see it turn white? Click on it. It takes you to a new page showing a short description of each page in Chapter 2, 'Medieval Byzantine Icons'.
Ignore the links for now. Using the scroll bar to move the text up and down, just glance over the descriptions. That's all you do on that page. When you are done, click the link 'Return to Welcome page & Menu'.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Retrieving a webpage
(First read this entire pragraph. Then come back here.) Hover again over the Chapter 2 menu block. This time click on the 3rd line, the one that reads 'Medieval Icons (Links Page)'. Click on it. You may see a message 'Loading... Please wait! Even if you don't see the message, wait until the page has fully loaded. Once it has, click on a link that reads 'Links Menu' (you will find one in the Floating Menu on the left). In the Links Menu, look up Russia, then look for Yaroslavl and click on it. In the Yaroslavl section you will see 3 links, the 2nd being 'Russian Icon Tour' (2005).
Don't click on that (second) link yet, because when you do you won't be able to see this tutorial any more. Right after you have clicked that (second) link leading to the Yaroslavl page, you minimize the Yaroslavl page. That enables you to continue reading this tutorial. Now click the link to go to the Yaroslavl page, then minimize it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you can read this line again then you minimized the Yaroslavl page (or you closed it). Before clicking any links on the Yaroslavl page, I want to draw your attention to a useful aspect you should know and remember. Now after again maximizing the Yaroslavl page, examine the back arrow and forward arrow in your browser menu. Then minimize the window to come back here.
I hope you noticed that the back and forward arrows were not activated. If you did not notice it, then go back there, have another look or click on the arrows and see that nothing happens. So how can you get back to the Medieval Icons Links Page? By simply closing the Yaroslavl page. So maximize the Yaroslavl page (window) again, and then close it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
See, you are back on the Medieval Icons Links page. Easy enough, right? May even seem silly. The fact is that every link on the (Medieval Icons) Links page opens in a new window. Just close that new window and you are back on the Medieval Icons Links page. This way the Links page does not have to reload.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Viewing an image
(Keep reading until you read 'Go do that !') On the Medieval Icons page, click again on the link that opens the Yaroslavl page. It will hide this tutorial but you know that when you close or minimize it you can come back here, at any time.
Caution : only right click** on an image on the Yaroslavl page. This means that you move your mouse pointer over an image, then depress the right side of your mouse. A menu will become visible. In that menu click on the line that reads 'Open in New Window'.
After you have seen a large view of an image in the new window, you close the new window and you are back on the Yaroslavl page. Next, you close the Yaroslavl page and you are back on the Medieval Icons Links page. Go do that !

** In regular use, on this site, you very seldom have to right click on an image. The reason you do it here is to make sure you don't lose the tutorial window. Because the new page may open in the tutorial window so the Tutorial gets lost.
Even if you do lose the tutorial window, you will find a link for it in the Yaroslavl section on the Medieval Icons Links Page, right underneath the 2nd link (Russian Icon Tour 2005).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's have a look at another image. Open the Yaroslavl page again. Now right click** on the icon of the Mother of God, the Great Panaghia of Yaroslavl. Scroll down, then click "Notes". In the Notes, click on "Alexander Boguslawski" or on "Byzantine Monuments, the Church of Panagia of Blachernae". Both links lead to large and interesting pages. You start reading them and by the time you are finished you can't remember how you got to where you are, and you start clicking on your browser's back arrow trying to find your way back. There is no need to do that because you can simply close the page you are on, and you will be back on the Yaroslavl page. Next, you close the Yaroslavl page and you are back on the Medieval Icons Links page.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now that you are back on the Medieval Icons Links Page, find the link 'Top of Page' in the Floating Menu and click on it. Back at the top of the Links page hover over the Intro Pages menu box, click on Welcome Page and you are back at where you started.
Now you know everything about navigating this website, because all the major pages work the same.
Mind you, not all pages are equipped with a six-tab menu, some have a one-tab pull-down menu. What you do then is click on the down arrow, make a selection (click on an entry to highlight it), then click Go!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
ATTENTION !!!
You are almost done. When you are ready to close windows, first resize them to maximum size, using your mouse pointer. If you don't do that now, all future windows will open at the reduced size ! Thus right after you have closed this Tutorial window (which you don't need to resize) resize the Welcome Page, then close it.

END
