The icon of the Mother of God of Three Hands is one the most famous of the Greek Orthodox Church and attracts many pilgrims. Its history is linked to St. John of Damascus (640-754), the Great Defender of the Holy Images. In 717 he was sentenced to have his hand severed. After the execution he turned to the Virgin with an absolut faith while praying and crying. Miraculously his hand was restored.
