DZYUBA, Petro
Peter Dzyuba's first encounter with Iconography happened in Western Australia in 1991. Because of religious oppression in his native Ukraine, since the take over of the communists in 1917, very little exposure to religious art was possible. He was impressed with the spiritual depth and beauty of the traditional Orthodox Iconography and felt the need to dedicate his life to glorify God through the writing of icons. Peter was especially touched by the encounter with the keeper of the Miraculous Icon of the Mother of God of Iveron, José (Joseph) Muñoz-Cortez, who was an iconographer as well. He was traveling with this Icon around the world. José Muñoz-Cortez was an apprentice of the great iconographer of our times -Archimandrite Kyprian (Pyzhov) (Blessed Memory ) . Father Kyprian carried out all the Iconographic work for the Russian Church Abroad for the past 40-50 years. His icons and Iconostasis are widespread around the world and are of Heavenly beauty. Peter learned about the Icon Studio in the Holy Trinity Monastery and Seminary in Jordanville, NY under direction of father Kyprian. The Icon Studio was known for a rich tradition of Russian Iconography. Having seen and admired father Kyprian work, Peter's one desire was to learn from this remarkable master of Iconography. In 1992, God made possible for Peter to travel to the Holy Land and be part of the Christian community there for one full year. Over there, he met mother Veronica (from the Russian Monastery of The Ascension of the Lord, Mount of Olives), who is an iconographer herself. She was Peter's first instructor of Iconography from a spiritual perspective. This experience made Peter's aspiration to become an iconographer even more fervent. In 1993, Peter was finally able to become a student in the Holy Trinity Seminary in Jordanville, NY, and a formal apprentice of the Iconography Studio. HRISTOV,
Radoslav Going by the works shown in his website, the author is quite an artist. Since we are primarily interested in the Byzantine Icon, it therefore is only his 'Byzantine Sinaitic' Icons which we will have a look at. And they are very beautiful indeed! When looking at the Virgin of the Sign, for example, I would be inclined to say 'perfect', in this context of icon writing meaning 'carried out with a high degree of perfection'. I don't think I ever saw a beautiful golden background as what the artist is showing us here. And so is the explanation given by the author, himself being a highly educated professional. MURPHY, Peter Peter Murphy was Born in 1959 in the U.K. and got his education at Jacob Kramer College of Art and the University of East London. He trained, also in London, with the famous artist-iconographer Dr Guillem Ramos Poqui. Murphy uses traditional techniques from medieval religious painting, including egg tempera paint and gold leaf. He paints as easily in perfect Italian style as that he masters the Orthodox Byzantine style. Quite interesting. Read more... SIMONEAU HALES,
Christine
Philmont, NY A Unique Point of View Christine sees the main purpose of icon writing as drawing us closer to God through the process of prayer and painting Gods word in visual form. She believes in encouraging each individual to participate in the spiritual discipline of icon writing at their own pace. Her contemporary painting is also about the deep power and action of symbols and beauty on our ability to enjoy and experience life. She loves making art work for people to live with, art which brings a heightened awareness of Gods creation and joy to our every day lives. It is certainly a challenging task to take up the iconic vocabulary and make it fresh and visually relevant to our time. Christine has succeeded in doing so, and doing so brilliantly. SLIWA, Robert Hello, I am Robert Sliwa from Poland. I was born there in 1963 in a town named Oswiecim. Presently, I live with my family in Kety located in the South of Poland which is almost all mountains. My interest in Byzantine Icons dates back to 2004. I took a course of iconography taught by the Jesuits in Cracow in 2006/2007, my first Master Teacher being Fr. Zygfryd SJ. I made many different icons. Several of them ended up in private collections in our coutry and abroad - Ireland, France, and the Philippines. Right now I am trying to perfect my techniques while at the same time I am working with other great iconographers anywhere in the world. But first of all, at the start of each day, I offer everything to God. WEBSITE :: www.byzantineicons.webpark.pl ICON :: The Mother of God of the Passion, also: The Virgin of Perpetual Help. SMULDERS,
Liesbeth Liesbeth Smulders-Groot came to know Byzantine Icons when she participated in a course on Art History and Painting by José Haggenburg. She was fascinated by how they were made. To find out more, she followed several courses (on making icons) by the Romanian Icon Painter Marieta Rotariu. From Esther den Engelse she learned how to do water gilding. Says Liesbeth "The entire procedure, from the preparation of the wooden board to the last pencil stripe, in the process handling glue, chalk, egg and pigments, is fascinating. In my experience the icon is not painted, but comes into being, layer after layer, with the initial (base) drawing serving as a guideline." I think you will not only like her icons, you will also like the way she writes about them, while explaining many details. And that regardless of wether you paint icons, pray with icons, or just love to look at icons. When I consider all the websites on Byzantine Icons I have seen, Liesbeth's site is definitely one of the better sites coming out of The Netherlands, as I haven't seen for some time. In December, Liesbeth's icons can be seen in the Library of Veldhoven (close to Eindhoven). In the meantime, Liesbeth has also started giving icon painting courses. Recently, for example, she has started giving a course at the Fathers of the Assumption in Boxtel (NL). Then she has been asked by the Roman Catholic Church in Zwolle to organize an icon painting course overthere in the spring of 2010. Remember - If you ever dreamed of having a truly handpainted byzantine icon, Liesbeth can probably help you out, as she is being regularly commissioned to painting icons. TIGARET, Mihaele
Welcome to the WEBSITE of Mihaela TIGARET ( BIZANTINICON ? ) Mihaela TIGARET was born on 18 september 1981, in Constanta, Romania. She graduated at the University of Orthodox Theology in Lasi, Romania, and specialized in church paintings and byzantine iconography. [ Mihaele Tigaret - Google Search ] Bizantinicon is the name of a Byzantine painting studio grouping together Mihaela and [friends?] [associates?] [ partners?], our goal being to bring a beam of light from ancient faith into the human soul, today. Our painters are specialised in the field of religious art, who studied Orthodox Theology and Church Painting. The icons you see here closely observe the work technique of the Byzantine style, from drawing, color and technique to the materials used. The icons are painted on linden tree wood that has been treated. The wood has criss-crossing bands on its back to prevent the icons structural change with time and to prolong its durability. The colours we use are based on tempera pigment and powder. The icons are covered in 24k gold-leaf, and not in slahmetal (an imitation of gold-leaf, used in many icons and which causes oxidation, that is unless genuine gold-leaf is used that remains unaltered over time). Icons are protected with a natural varnish film, so as to ensure better preservation in time. TSESMETZI,
Dimitra Born in Tanzania in 1951 from Greek parents, Dimitra studied aesthetics until, in 1995, her artistic research led her to genuine traditional Byzantine iconography. She then studied with iconograhers G. Barouni and A. FLoka in Athens (portable icons and murals), where she was distinguished with praise. She exhibited her works at numerous places, and once again she was distinguished. Here is what she believes: "I believe that by taking an inanimate piece of wood and giving it a form, it feels as though it becomes alive; then, this takes you to a spiritual world that is so much better, calm and filled with love; love is the best nourishment of man. (When you travel mentally to the spiritual world of the Saints, then you feel a better person). My goal is to present the figures of Christ, Panagia and the Saints in a better way, so that by looking at them one will be able to travel to this beautiful spiritual world." ZAZZARO, Grace Grace Zazzaro grew up in New York in a large family. Somehow early on she studied at the Chicago Art Institute in embellishment and design. Art, history and theology, however, captivated her real interests. They took her to an in-depth study of Byzantine Iconography. She was fortunate to travel to England, Ireland, France and Russia where she could immerse herself in ancient art and history. On one of these occasions she spent three weeks touring Moscow, St. Petersburg and the Golden ring, where she met with some fellow teachers and students of Ksenia Pokrovsky in their studio. "We did have a problem communicating because my Russian is terrible", said Grace, "but then I recognized my work in theirs and I was thrilled to make that connection. They were happy too because I was a student of Ksenia's and in Moscow Ksenia's famous reputation is still alive and thriving." "I also spent time with Alexander Vasilevich in Stalnov and Christina Prokhorova in her studio in St. Petersburg and had the pleasure to discuss Icon techniques and view her latest works. In short, I am blessed to have had many opportunities to meet so many gifted Iconographers during my visits. And, of course, I also studied with Ksenia for a short time, and we often refer to her works." At the present time, Grace is a gallery coordinator and fundraiser, and paints Icons for churches and private collections. Grace's studio, Athella, is located in her home in Mystic, Connecticut and is a central part of her family life. HART
Aidan (Updated: 28 June 2009) Born in England in 1957, Aidan Hart has been a professional icon and fresco painter for over twenty years. He also is a theologian and wood carver. He studied iconography in the UK and during three years in Thessalonica and Mount Athos. He has had works commissioned by HRH The Prince of Wales, and by many churches and individuals around the world. He is a visiting tutor for The Princes School of Traditional Art, London, and runs icon courses as well. He has lectured widely, has published numerous articles, written a number of books*, and has curated several exhibitions of old and new icons. Clearly, Aidan Hart is a very talented man, and definitely a Master Iconographer of our time. (Click this link for more details.) Of particular interest to the reader would be Aidan Hart's great knowledge and understanding of iconography in its historical context and his interpretation thereof as it applies to Orthodox iconography today. In an excellent article titled Iconographers of the Twentieth Century (PDF), written in 2000, he provides an overview of essential elements, without getting bogged down into details : a "must read" for every iconographer conscious of the importance of maintaining the Canon, while going beyond merely making copies of 12th-century icons. Superb ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * One of his books : The Pain of the Earth : A Cry for Change ATTENTION PLEASE !! (Added: 28 June 2009) A NEW DIPLOMA COURSE IN ICON AND WALL PAINTING In October 2009, Aidan is due to begin teaching a four year Diploma course in icon and wall painting. As far as known, this will be the only course of its type in the English speaking world, where the skills and theology of icon and wall painting will be taught systematically over a period of time. This gives greater scope to enter more deeply into the tradition than can be provided by attendance at isolated five day courses. WHAT THE COURSE OFFERS The four year part-time course will cover the techniques of egg tempera icon panel painting and wall painting, placing these in the context of the theology of the icon. The course will be taught primarily by Aidan, along with some visiting tutors. Areas to be studied include: Pigment and panel preparation; techniques of egg tempera icon painting and manuscript illumination; theology of the icon; studies of icon masterpieces; the relationship of iconography and church architecture and worship; techniques of secco and fresco wall painting; introduction to mosaic technique; business skills. There are twelve places for students to study part-time for the four year duration of the course. Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded a Diploma in Iconography by the Prince's School of Traditional Art (PSTA). PSTA is also running a range of five-day courses in London which include various liturgical arts. - See the webpage below [ LINK ] for details - WHEN The course will run for four years. Classes will take place usually on the last Monday and Tuesday of each month (except August), and run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an evening lecture/discussion on Monday nights. If the last Monday and Tuesday fall on a public-holiday the classes will be rescheduled. Classes are due to begin on 26th October 2009. Students will be expected to do at least two hours of additional study a week. WHERE The classes will be held in the beautiful premises of The Holy Trinity Centre, Church Road, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY3 9HF. COST The fee per year is £1,500 and is paid in advance of the course starting each academic year. The fee includes tuition, lunch, Monday evening meal, and refreshments. Accommodation is the responsibility of the student, but a list of bed and breakfasts will be provided (average price £35 per person per night). Students are expected to provide all materials at a cost of around £100 per year. She replied that she was happy I had noticed this icon, which in fact had been her first. But we'll let her tell it. Yolande Denneulin HETTANGE-GRANDE FRANCE ENGLISH TRANSLATION Hi Peter, I am pleased that you noticed the icon of Our Lady of Soufanieh and that you love this icon. It is the first icon I painted (wrote). A priest gave me a book titled "Astonishing icons of the Mother of God", by Jean MATHIOT (edition of Mediaspaul). In it he describes several stories of icons of Mary including the one of Our Lady of Soufanieh. What you added back to the site corresponds, by means of video and text, with what is written in the book and which touched me so much that I decided to paint this icon - still in my possession today. I am happy to find back all this information surrounding the icon. I think that it will allow many people to understand that an icon is not just an image, but that it is a real presence, as well as a word from the Gospel, in color, which will bring us to prayer and communion. Moreover, the information you found allowed me to more fully understand what there is to know about MYRNA and the revelations she conveys to us. I congratulate you with your excellent site on icons. The Priest being Brendans father. For inquiries or to commission a handpainted Icon, please contact Brendan via email at stjohnicons@gmail.com This is the home page for Saint John the Baptist Orthodox Christian Church, (ROCOR), Blue River, Wisconsin. We are a small parish in rural southwest Wisconsin, near the beautiful Lower Wisconsin State Riverway. We have been located here in the wilds of Southwest Wisconsin for 20 years. Our pastor is Father Thomas Kulp. Our Church building is housed in what used to be the granary--the oldest building on our small farm. Twenty years ago our Bishop and his monks came and built us a beautiful Church. In three weeks and with $3000 they put new walls inside and wood siding outside so that the old building was sandwiched inside a totally new structure. It was small, but so was our congregation. Many people came and went over the years, but our core of parishioners remained small. Our children grew up, got married, and started having children of their own, and suddenly our Church was bursting at the seams. Two years ago we began adding to the Church. First we expanded on one side to give more room to the choir. The next year we broke through the back wall and doubled the space for the congregation to stand. This is an ongoing project. We are at a standstill right now because we have run out of money. The Church still needs a floor to put over the particle boards we are standing on now. We need a front door and icons painted on the walls. Contributions to this work would be greatly appreciated. In mid-October our son, Brendan Kulp, an Iconographer, began accepting private commissions. His website was just launched and can be viewed at www.stjohnsiconstudio.com We also have a workshop where we build wooden icon shrines and will be building many other church and home items. icons-for-sale-now |

Message for Firefox (FF) users ________________________The Design of this page -- functioning and appearance/display -- was carried out with respect to both IE and FF. With the steady improvements made by FF and this site's webmaster, page appearance/display in FF is virtually identical to that in IE. With regard to SortTable functioning, it functions very well now, not perfect, but very well. However, it is more 'unforgiving' than IE. Therefore, in order to be able to say with certainty that SortTable functioning (in FF) is ok, all inaccuracies need to have been removed. * This page has 2 menus, a Floating Menu (left), and a Fixed Menu at various locations. |
