How to find an iconographer's website
(1) Click on a first letter in (letter) menu below to see an alphabetical list of iconographers. (2) In the list look for the name of the iconographer (or studio) you want. Click on the name. This is the quickest way to proceed. To find the most recent entries, click on the heading (button) of the No. column. That will initiate the sort. Wait till the sort has finished. Then repeat. Now the last entry will be showing on top. Alternatively, sort the (Imagebase) entries by number, and repeat. Next, scroll down to see them. |

Afanasyeva, Nataliya Nataliya Vladimirovna Afanasyeva (b. 1951) is an artist with multi-faceted talents. She is accomplished in numerous areas of easel painting and the graphic arts. With regard to icons, Afanasyeva often paints the faces of the saints within her icon frames herself but even more frequently chooses the icons of centuries past. Her frames maintain the basic flow of the iconic images and remain faithful to the prescribed form. The structure of these frames is frequently in harmony with the iconic image and does not detract ones attention from it. On the contrary, it amplifies the spiritual quality of the icon. Embroidering beads on icon frames is extremely labor-intensive. This particular technique makes it difficult for the artist to create a large number of works, let alone mass produce them. Throughout the 1990s, icons in beaded frames by Afanasyeva were on exhibition in museums in Russia and other countries. Connoisseurs have had high praise for her works, some of which were acquired for private collections in Saint Petersburg, Germany, Sweden, and the United States. Afanasyeva has played an important role in the renaissance of icon frame embroidery as an art form in Russia. BOGDANOV, Nikolai and Natalia Both Nikolai and Natalia are Icon-painters. They mostly write their icons in the style of the Moscow icon-painting school of the XV-XVIth centuries, while thereby also adhering to the tradition of Byzantine art. They work hard and efficiently. They designed 12 iconostases while taking an active part in their architectural development. A number of new iconographic solutions (the image of Xenia of Petersburg, All Saints with New Martyrs, St. Seraphim of Vuritsa and others) belongs to them. One of their most important and comprehensive works is the decoration of the church of St.Sofia (Pushkin) with icons. Nikolai Bogdanov holds icon-painting classes in the Ecclesiastic Academy in St-Petersburg, and acts as a consultant at an icon-painting workshop in Valaam. For 13 years Natalya Bogdanova has been working as a teacher at the Institute named after LY.Repin belonging to Russian Art Academy. Thanks to the Bogdanovs' advice and personal experience a lot of young icon-painters improve their masterhood. The Bogdanovs participated in a number of exhibitions in Russia («Modern icon-painting», «Orthodox Rus» and others) and abroad. One can see their icons in Germany, France, the USA and other countries. All their works are done in a highly professional manner. CZARNECKI Marek Born in 1964 in Bristol, CT USA, from Polish parents (who, in 1952, came to the US as displaced persons), and a graduate of New Yorks prestigious School of Visual Arts, Marek Czarnecki never intended becoming an iconographer. One day in 1991 his father "volunteered" him (1) to paint an icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa for St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Even though at first resentful when he learned about it, it wasn't long before he left his job in Manhattan and returned home to write the icon. The occasion became the springboard for his career as iconographer. At the present time, Marek devotes most of his time to iconography. He is also pursuing the restoration of statuary (2). During the past 6 years, as a disciple and under the guidance of master iconographer Xenia Pokrovsky, who according to the Russian art magazine [Creation] vol. 1 (1991) is "without a doubt one of the most interesting and authoritative icon painters today", Marek Czarnecki, a Catholic, is slowly developing a specialization for saints of the Latin Rite, for whom there is no previous protoypes. With her encouragement he has written icons of Saints Maximillian Kolbe, Faustina Kowalska, several of Saint Francis, and Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. Furthermore, he assists Xenia Pokrovsky in organizing workshops nationally to teach iconography (see hexaemeron). He thereby writes and distributes an Iconographer's Manual, articulating her teachings, technique, approach and understanding. Website: http://www.seraphicrestorations.com . The website does not yet show many icons. The artist sent me some of his icons, however, and they are beautiful ! To see them, click the image to the left or the link that follows. DE BENEDICTIS, Antonio
"Santo Mandylion"
Brindisi Born in 1965, Antonio De Benedictis has been working as an iconographer since 1992. He participated in a first workshop in Trento with masters Giovanni Mezzalira and Fabio Nones, both Italian iconographers. He studied theology in that same period, graduating in 1994. Says Antonio : "I consider these theological studies deeply linked to iconography because an iconographer also is a theologian and not only an artist." Presently, he is in close contact with two other iconographers who are both masters and great friends: Giovanni Raffa and the Kostantinos Xenopoulos. The latter is from Greece and teaches iconography at the Ecclesiastical Academy on Mount Athos. Antonio works from his own studio "Santo Mandylion", named that way "because seeing God's face is the deepest wish of man, and that linen cloth was Christ's gift to enable us to anticipate that Holy Vision." DIRKS, Delphia Delphia Dirks' interest in iconography got started in the early 1980's when she was living in the Soviet Union where her husband was serving at the U.S. Embassy. While until then she had been painting in oil and watercolor, she now undertook to study both the acrylic and egg tempera methods, mostly with Russian iconographers in both Russia and the US. She exhibits at churches and in shows, and works mainly by commission, preferring the Byzantine Style. Website : http://www.iconsbydelphia.com/ ==> 27 icons Icon : The Crucifixion, San Damiano Crucifix The San Damiano Crucifix became known through Saint Francis of Assisi (1182 - 1226), Italy. St. Francis often prayed in the small dilapidated church of San Damiano just outside the walls of the city of Assisi. In the church was a painted, Byzantine Crucifix. One day while in prayer, St. Frances heard the image of Christ speak to him, saying "rebuild my church." Francis took this message literally and did rebuild the church which is still run by Franciscan Friars today. DORMITION SKETE ICONS Dormition Skete may well be the only Monastery in North America dedicated to the painting of traditional icons. It offers panel icons and frescos, both of them painted through the hand of Archbishop Gregory with the aid of the monks of Dormition Skete. Archbishop Gregory has been painting in the Greek Cretan style for over forty-two years, inspired by the great iconographers of ancient times, including the noted (contemporary) iconographer Photios Kontoglou. The Monastery also offers over four hundred mounted icons for sale through their web site, with a library of several thousands of themes from which to draw an image if required. Mounted icons are produced in the monastery, in sizes up to approximately six feet by four feet, with printing equipment that utilizes actual pigments rather than inks. The quality of both hand painted icons and mounted photographs is excellent. Website: http://www.dormitionskete.org Icon: Christ Pantocrator Updated: 3 January 2009 |

Gashev, Georgy Georgy Victorovich Gashevs (b. 1960) icons stand out in the St Petersburg icon-painting tradition of the last decade of the 20th century. For Georgy Gashev icon-painting is inseparable from the Orthodox Church. His schooling at the Academy of Industrial Design, his traineeship in Moscow (St Daniels Monastery) and Pskov (Pskov-Pechora monastery) have contributed to the making of his talent for icon-painting. The encounter with Father Zenon, the world famous icon-painter, decided his fate and helped realize his vocation. Not only was Gashev spiritually guided by Father Zenon but he also worked by his side partaking of the wisdom of the ancient and beautiful art. Gashevs icons belong to many churches of Russia: to St Daniels Monastery, Valaam Island, The Trinity St Sergius, Pustyn (Hermitage), The Church of Our Savior in Moscow, Pskov-Pechora monastery and many others. St Petersburg boasts his works in the Church of Transfiguration of Our Lord, the Church of the Assumption at the monastery at Optina Pustyn (Optina Hermitage), etc. He has been a regular participant at The Orthodox Russia exhibitions (since 1996). His icons are well-known in Finland, Germany and other countries. They belong not only to Orthodox churches but also they are much sought after by many a connoisseur in Russia and outside. HART
Aidan (Updated: 28 June 2009) Born in England in 1957, Aidan Hart has been a professional icon and fresco painter for over twenty years. He also is a theologian and wood carver. He studied iconography in the UK and during three years in Thessalonica and Mount Athos. He has had works commissioned by HRH The Prince of Wales, and by many churches and individuals around the world. He is a visiting tutor for The Princes School of Traditional Art, London, and runs icon courses as well. He has lectured widely, has published numerous articles, written a number of books*, and has curated several exhibitions of old and new icons. Clearly, Aidan Hart is a very talented man, and definitely a Master Iconographer of our time. (Click this link for more details.) Of particular interest to the reader would be Aidan Hart's great knowledge and understanding of iconography in its historical context and his interpretation thereof as it applies to Orthodox iconography today. In an excellent article titled Iconographers of the Twentieth Century (PDF), written in 2000, he provides an overview of essential elements, without getting bogged down into details : a "must read" for every iconographer conscious of the importance of maintaining the Canon, while going beyond merely making copies of 12th-century icons. Website : http://www.aidanharticons.com/ ==> 25 icons - 12 carvings - 13 frescoes - all of great beauty ! Also see icons by Aiden Hart on a site maintained by his brother : http://www.zeroland.co.nz/aidan_hart.html ==> 4 images Icon to the left : Holy Savior, detail. Superb ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * One of his books : The Pain of the Earth : A Cry for Change ATTENTION PLEASE !! (Added: 28 June 2009) A NEW DIPLOMA COURSE IN ICON AND WALL PAINTING In October 2009, Aidan is due to begin teaching a four year Diploma course in icon and wall painting. As far as known, this will be the only course of its type in the English speaking world, where the skills and theology of icon and wall painting will be taught systematically over a period of time. This gives greater scope to enter more deeply into the tradition than can be provided by attendance at isolated five day courses. WHAT THE COURSE OFFERS The four year part-time course will cover the techniques of egg tempera icon panel painting and wall painting, placing these in the context of the theology of the icon. The course will be taught primarily by Aidan, along with some visiting tutors. Areas to be studied include: Pigment and panel preparation; techniques of egg tempera icon painting and manuscript illumination; theology of the icon; studies of icon masterpieces; the relationship of iconography and church architecture and worship; techniques of secco and fresco wall painting; introduction to mosaic technique; business skills. There are twelve places for students to study part-time for the four year duration of the course. Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded a Diploma in Iconography by the Prince's School of Traditional Art (PSTA). PSTA is also running a range of five-day courses in London which include various liturgical arts. - See the webpage below [ LINK ] for details - WHEN The course will run for four years. Classes will take place usually on the last Monday and Tuesday of each month (except August), and run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an evening lecture/discussion on Monday nights. If the last Monday and Tuesday fall on a public-holiday the classes will be rescheduled. Classes are due to begin on 26th October 2009. Students will be expected to do at least two hours of additional study a week. WHERE The classes will be held in the beautiful premises of The Holy Trinity Centre, Church Road, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY3 9HF. COST The fee per year is £1,500 and is paid in advance of the course starting each academic year. The fee includes tuition, lunch, Monday evening meal, and refreshments. Accommodation is the responsibility of the student, but a list of bed and breakfasts will be provided (average price £35 per person per night). Students are expected to provide all materials at a cost of around £100 per year. HERITAGE STUDIO
Under the leadership of Alexander Sofinsky,
Heritage Studio has developed into a successful creative organization of
scientists, engineers and artists, each of which is a professional in his area
of expertise. They are unique in that they supply wood carved low-relief icons
to the blind who can 'read' the icons by tactile perception. While it was never
clear to me whether wood carved icons were fully recognized icons or not, there
seems to be no doubt that they are, that in fact they have been for a long
time. Moreover, there was a tradition in many temples and monasteries of Russia
to place under a 'picture-icon' its reduced relief copy. This tradition is
still alive today in the monasteries of the Holy Mount Athos in Greece.

HÜSSTEGE Geert (Icon Atelier Hüsstege) A well known iconographer, Geert Hüsstege lectures on icons and also restores and sells (old) icons. These are mostly Russian icons from the 17th to the 19th century. Site: http://www.iconen.nl/ ==> 37 beautiful icons; Icon: Christ Angel of theHoly Silence by Geert Hüsstege, 2002 The icon of Christ Angel of Holy Silence finds its origin in a Russian icon of around 1800. The icon calls us to silence, to become immersed in silence. This really is the call of each and every icon. We are called to silence in order to meditate, to be able to listen to the Lord speaking to us and to be able to speak to Him. The icon englobes elements of 'Sofia' (Wisdom), 'Emmanuel' (Jesus, God, being with us) and 'Logos' (the Word of God eternal). The Angel of Holy Silence is the symbolic representation of both Christ and Sofia, the Wisdom or Silence of the Suffering Servant announcing the Truth without making noise : Jesus did not answer to any of the accusations made against Him, to the amazement of Pilate (Matthew 27, 12-14). IANOVSKAIA Tatiana Toronto, Ontario Utterly amazing ! At times, the answer I get from an iconographer when asking what it was that took them to start painting icons, is utterly amazing. Here is the answer Tatiana Ianovskaia gave me : When I was 11 years old, I found the "icon of Christ not made with hands" in the garbage of the yard of the building we lived in" ! The artist graduated from the Art College in Moscow in 1981, following which she restored icons in the Theophany Cathedral at Yelohovo, Moscow, and murals in the Church of Dmitrii Solunskii, near Moscow. In 1982, when working as an iconographer in the Icon studio of the Moscow Patriarch, she was introduced to the technique of using egg tempera to paint icons. From 1983-1985 she was an iconographer in Saint Danilov's Monastery (click link to read about the monastery's background) where the famous iconographer Fr. Teodor Zinon was her teacher ! In the period that followed, until her immigration in Canada in 1998, with a husband and two children, she painted icons mostly for private collections in Moscow, Israel and France. Since then (1998-2005), the artist works for the Archdiocese of Canada in the Bishop's Chapel of St. Silouan the Athonite, where she made all icons in the Iconostasis of the Chapel, including the Royal Doors. During that same period she made several more icons elsewhere for Chapels, Churches and private collections. JACKSON Nancy Working under the name Timshel Studio, located in Vallejo, CA, Nancy Jackson is a professional iconographer and master Gobelin-Aubusson tapestry artist. For as long as she can remember she has sought icons as a place where the relationship with God can be experienced. Since the early 1980s, she studied Greek and Russian iconography in books and exhibitions until, in 1988, the desire was born to paint icons. Finding a teacher was difficult though. In 1999, she studied with Aleksandr Karon of San Francisco. Next, she studied Russian iconography with Christopher Gosey. He introduced her to Xenia Pokrovsky, who offered to instruct her. In May 2000, she returned to the East Coast and worked with Xenia in a highly intensive study period, during which she was launched an egg-tempera Russian iconographer. She has continued to pursue iconography with deep passion, to this very day. At least 50% of her studio time is taken up by iconography - Russian, Ethiopian or Coptic. She also does private commisions for Gobelin tapestry icons, has embroidered numerous baptismal napkins with sacred motifs (used as symbolic napkins to wipe the childs head), and occasionally does traditional artwork in various paint and drawing media. She teaches Russian, Ethiopian and Coptic iconography and Gobelin-Aubusson tapestry extensively and exhibits widely through the US and occasionally in Europe. Her tapestry and iconography work can be seen at Timshel Sudio, Website : http://www.timshelstudio.com . For a wider variety of her work... Also visit : http://www.thinplace.com (Artist Galleries / Nancy Jackson). It is the website of Thinplace Gallery who represents her. Her many works on display include 12 icons (egg tempera on wood). JOVANOVIC, Biljana Born in Belgrade, Serbia, Biljana Jovanovic presently lives in Athens, Greece, and works in both Athens and Belgrade. Her husband is a Priest of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Athens and a great theological and iconographical critic of Biljana's work. When I saw the artist's icons, I was a little surprised. I could see that they were made by a skilled professional and I liked the images and colors. But I wasn't sure what type of icons these were. I wrote to Biljana asking for more information. In her reply, she indicated that she adopted an early Christian style of iconography. Hear (read) Biljana explain it... "Yes, my icons are different from most contemporary icons we see nowadays in icon exhibitions and on the Internet. Yet, they have all canonical features of orthodox icons, including inverse perspective, light without shadows, aureoles, letters... One reason that they are different is that I take some very rare examples of icons from early Christian art as prototypes because early Christian art is my favorite period (of Christian art). This sets them apart from the majority of today's icons that are made by icon painters whose prototypes are mostly examples of iconography of the 13th - 15th centuries. Another reason that my icons are different is the fact that I do not copy icons. During painting I look at the old examples that are my prototypes, but I don't aim at making identical copies. Because making identical copies is what is done in the 20th century, but it is not what was done in the golden period of byzantine painting. The only icon I make without prototype is the icon of the prophet Noah but just with regard to one aspect. As you know, the icon of St. Noah is presented by a Saint with an empty ark. That was very strange to me because historically the ark was not empty. From an eschatological point of view it was not empty either because according to the Church Fathers the ark represented the Church which aims at the salvation of all of creation. So I concluded that the representation of the old painters was insatisfactory from a theological and from an iconographical point of view. Following it, I had many conversations on the subject with priests and professors of theological studies in both Serbia and here in Greece, where I presently live. All of them said that the right theological and iconographical model of that icon is an icon of the ark with animals. I subsequently received the blessing to paint the icon of the prophet Noah this way, hence I 'put' animals in the ark. When the icon was finished it was warmly received in the Serbian Orthodox Church as well as here in Athens, together with all my other icons." KALININ, Anna Anna Kalinin received her first drawing lessons from her maternal grandmother, Olga Turzhanov. Next, she studied art formally in a specialized art school. At 16 she began her training as an iconographer, working as an apprentice with Xenya Pokrovsky, a well-known Moscow-bred iconographer, currently working in Boston, USA. Anna went on to earn a degree in restoration from the Stroganov Art School of Moscow, all the while continuing her work with Ksenya Pokrovsky. Thus, Anna became a qualified restorer and iconographer: today she works with egg tempera, oils and acrylics. Anna is also a qualified fresco painter, as well as a Florentine- and Byzantine-style mosaic maker. The artist was fortunate to work with many well-known artists and restorers: she was taught restoring from professor Ovchinnikov, a world-famous restorer; fresco painting from professor Filatov, and gilding techniques from Father Zenon (Zinon). Among the multitude of talented artists that flourish in post-perestroika Russia today, Anna Kalinin is unique in her flexibility - she masters different styles, ranging from Byzantine, to Russian, to Florentine. Today, her work can be found in Moscow, in the Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow ; in monasteries such as Optina and Valaam ; in Bologna, Italy ; in Australia ; in the U.S.A. (Ohio, and New York) ; and in many other places around the world. Recently, Anna completed a large iconostasis for the Trinity church in Tsaritsono (a Moscow suburb), consecrated in honour of the Millenium of Christianity in Russia. KNOWLES, Ian 'Elias Icons'
Here is what the iconographer says of himself
: "I am an English iconographer. I studied under Fr. Egon Sendler in France and did an apprenticeship with Aidan Hart in England. I am a Roman Catholic, with a degree in Theology from Oxford University, a diploma in Pastoral Theology from Heythrop College London, and experience in the refurbishment of churches. I mainly paint panel icons, but have some experience of fresco." Website : http://www.eliasicons.co.uk ==> 6 icons The site shows six icons, the themes of which seem to have been expertly chosen and certainly have been expertly explained. I find it interesting how the artist has painted the face of the Theotokos to resemble the face of Our Lady of Philermos, as painted by a Greek painter (16th c.) and as painted by the contemporary Czech iconographer Makarius Tauc. Not heard of often, but quite interesting, nevertheless, is the popular belief that the images shown on icons (of Our Lady of Philermos) strongly resemble the face of the Holy Virgin during her life on earth. KUSKOVA, Elena Elena (Yelena) Kuskova has been painting icons for over 20 years, during which time she made three hundred icons. One of her icons has been acquired by Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery and is now part of its permanent collection *(icon to the left, and text further down)*. Various churches also own her works. A few years ago, Yelana Kuskova befriended Austria's Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Shuessel. Besides a well known career as a politician, Mr. Shuessel is an accomplished musician and icon painter. More recently, at the end of January (this year) Mr. Shuessel made an official visit to Russia and met of course with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. In one of the rooms of the Creative Union of Russian Artists, amidst beautiful icons, a work place complete with easels, paints, etc. was set up for the Austrian Chancellor. Under Yelena Kuskova's guidance, Mr. Shuessel worked there nonstop for two days to make his version of "Elijah's Ascent into Heaven in a Whirlwind", allowing himself only very short breaks for cups of coffee. This capacity for work amazed the Russian painters while his artistic accomplishment was no less admired. * Icon : New Martyr Fr Constantine Golubev with scenes of his life. KUSOV Ivan Kusov Ivan Alexandrovich was born in 1958. In 1982 he graduated from the department "Interior and equipment" (speciality furniture design) of the Institute named after V.I.Mukhina. The skills of icon-painter he gained under the guidance of Golubev at the icon-painting workshop belonging to the Ecclesiastic Academy and the Seminary of St.Petersburg. He follows the style of the art of Ancient Rus and Byzantine and is especially loyal to Moscow school: to icon-painting of Andrei Rublyov and Dionysius, the peculiarity of their colouring and eurhythmy. Kusov painted icons for icon-stands in the church of the Khazan icon of the Mother of God and the church of Koimeis (St.Petersburg. 1998-2002). His icons are kept in temples and private collections in Russia (St.Petersburg, Novgorod), Finland, France. Icon: The Dormition of the Mother of God (The Assumption of the Mother of God) * Email: info@markellstudios.com ---------------------------------------------------------- * Explanation of the icon - by Nicholas Markell. The belief in the bodily assumption of the Mother of God is common to East and West, Orthodox and Catholic, though each has a distinct understanding of the event. From the earliest times, the church commonly held that after the falling asleep of the Blessed Virgin in the presence of the Apostles, upon the request of St. Thomas (who arrived later), Marys cave tomb was opened and found empty. Before her assumption, The Mother of God gives St. Thomas her girdle (belt). The story of the Assumption is a parallel account to the Resurrection event in many ways. While the other Apostles doubt her assumption, it was only upon the witness of St. Thomas that they all visit the cave tomb to find it empty and thus, believe. The Dormition icon of St. Andrei Rublev who uncommonly imaged The Mother of God being assumed body and soul in pure white robes influenced the colors of this icon. Moreover, this Assumption icon shows the waters of the valley flowing anew, echoing an ancient title of The Mother of GodLife Giving Spring. This is because the ancient church believed the Blessed Virgin was buried in the Kidron Valley, just outside the walls of Jerusalem. Kidron means, stream. The Kidron Valley possessed a natural spring called the Gihon, which means, to gush forth. In Sacred Scripture, the Gihon Spring is named as one of the four rivers of Eden, a symbol associated with paradise. |
