Afanasyeva, Nataliya
Nataliya Vladimirovna Afanasyeva (b. 1951) is an artist with multi-faceted talents. She is accomplished in numerous areas of easel painting and the graphic arts.
With regard to icons, Afanasyeva often paints the faces of the saints within her icon frames herself but even more frequently chooses the icons of centuries past. Her frames maintain the basic flow of the iconic images and remain faithful to the prescribed form. The structure of these frames is frequently in harmony with the iconic image and does not detract one’s attention from it. On the contrary, it amplifies the spiritual quality of the icon. Embroidering beads on icon frames is extremely labor-intensive. This particular technique makes it difficult for the artist to create a large number of works, let alone mass produce them.
Throughout the 1990s, icons in beaded frames by Afanasyeva were on exhibition in museums in Russia and other countries. Connoisseurs have had high praise for her works, some of which were acquired for private collections in Saint Petersburg, Germany, Sweden, and the United States. Afanasyeva has played an important role in the renaissance of icon frame embroidery as an art form in Russia.
Extract of text by Nina Sergeevna Kuteynikova, Art Critic (Lecturer, Ph.D. Candidate, Art History, Academy of Arts) for Encyclopedia St. Petersburg Art XXth Century / Russki Album Foundation.

ALEXANDRIA.RU   www
I haven't been able to figure out who the artist is, but he (she) sure knows how to work with colors and other details. Even though it doesn't come close to the simplicity of medieval icons, as it clearly hasn't been meant to either, I have never seen an icon "decorated" this elaborate and beautiful !

BALAN, Priest Irineu  --  Studio "Saint Veronica"
Father Hieromonk Irineu Balan was born in 1973. In 1998 he graduated from both The Faculty of Fine Arts (Religious Paintings section) and the Faculty of Orthodox Theology (Pastoral Theology section) in Iasi city. In 1999 he received the tonsure for monastic life and the name of Irineu. From 1999 - 2003 he painted many Orthodox icons for Romanian Orthodox and Catholic churches, and also for churches from other countries including Italy, Spain, Luxembourg, Canada, U.S., Switzerland and Great Britain. Currently, Fr. Irineu paints religious icons and serves the Orthodox Church as a priest and confessor at the Bucium Monastery in Iasi city. He uses the traditional icon painting technique of egg tempera on wood. Through his icons he reveals a quiet and profound spirituality, one which is most proper for monks living in a world full of haste and noise.

BOGDANOV, Nikolai and Natalia
Both Nikolai and Natalia are Icon-painters. They mostly write their icons in the style of the Moscow icon-painting school of the XV-XVIth centuries, while thereby also adhering to the tradition of Byzantine art. They work hard and efficiently. They designed 12 iconostases while taking an active part in their architectural development. A number of new iconographic solutions (the image of Xenia of Petersburg, All Saints with New Martyrs, St. Seraphim of Vuritsa and others) belongs to them. One of their most important and comprehensive works is the decoration of the church of St.Sofia (Pushkin) with icons.
Nikolai Bogdanov holds icon-painting classes in the Ecclesiastic Academy in St-Petersburg, and acts as a consultant at an icon-painting workshop in Valaam. For 13 years Natalya Bogdanova has been working as a teacher at the Institute named after LY.Repin belonging to Russian Art Academy.
Thanks to the Bogdanovs' advice and personal experience a lot of young icon-painters improve their masterhood. The Bogdanovs participated in a number of exhibitions in Russia («Modern icon-painting», «Orthodox Rus» and others) and abroad. One can see their icons in Germany, France, the USA and other countries. All their works are done in a highly professional manner.

CZARNECKI Marek
Born in 1964 in Bristol, CT USA, from Polish parents (who, in 1952, came to the US as displaced persons), and a graduate of New York’s prestigious School of Visual Arts, Marek Czarnecki never intended becoming an iconographer. One day in 1991 his father "volunteered" him (1) to paint an icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa for St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Even though at first resentful when he learned about it, it wasn't long before he left his job in Manhattan and returned home to write the icon. The occasion became the springboard for his career as iconographer. At the present time, Marek devotes most of his time to iconography. He is also pursuing the restoration of statuary (2).
During the past 6 years, as a disciple and under the guidance of master iconographer Xenia Pokrovsky, who according to the Russian art magazine [Creation] vol. 1 (1991) is "without a doubt one of the most interesting and authoritative icon painters today", Marek Czarnecki, a Catholic, is slowly developing a specialization for saints of the Latin Rite, for whom there is no previous protoypes. With her encouragement he has written icons of Saints Maximillian Kolbe, Faustina Kowalska, several of Saint Francis, and Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.
Furthermore, he assists Xenia Pokrovsky in organizing workshops nationally to teach iconography (see hexaemeron). He thereby writes and distributes an Iconographer's Manual, articulating her teachings, technique, approach and understanding.

DAMIANAKIS, Elias
Born in 1966 in New York, Elias was already a skillful artisan before he began his twelve year apprenticeship in traditional iconographic techniques. In his quest to acquire these, he studied at several universities in the United States (1981 to 1986) and then ventured out to Europe. Splitting his time between Europe and the United States, he collaborated, consulted and trained with leading artists and iconographers in private studios and various monasteries.

The most notable among these are George Philipakes of New York (born in Crete) with whom he worked for about 15 years (1980-1995), and Constantine Youssis also of New York with whom he worked for 6 years. Projects he worked on included  — the Koimoisis (Dormition) of the Theotokos in Hampton, L.I., and
 — the dome and altar icons of the Panaghia Faneromeni Church in Greece.

Throughout the years Elias travelled extensively to Greece, Turkey, France, Yugoslavia and Italy. Whether a pilgrim, a student of Byzantine art, or an official delegate representing the Orthodox Church of America, he has a strong   commitment to the Mother church of Orthodoxy and to the Holy Patriarchate of Constantinople.

In 1991 Elias established his own iconography studio. Adhering at all times to strict Orthodox prototypes, Elias hand paints portable icons and large wall paintings thereby striving to suit the needs of the individual or community. He incorporates various techniques into his work including egg tempera, fresco, secco, gold gilding and produces his own paints from pigments. He also renders complete restoration of portable icons and murals. Elias lives his faith and understands his ministry as an Orthodox Iconographer working in the United States. He is currently accepting commissions for iconography for Orthodox communities and laity.

DE BENEDICTIS, Antonio     "Santo Mandylion"  Brindisi
Born in 1965, Antonio De Benedictis has been working as an iconographer since 1992. He participated in a first workshop in Trento with masters Giovanni Mezzalira and Fabio Nones, both Italian iconographers. He studied theology in that same period, graduating in 1994. Says Antonio : "I consider these theological studies deeply linked to iconography because an iconographer also is a theologian and not only an artist."
Presently, he is in close contact with two other iconographers who are both masters and great friends: Giovanni Raffa and the Kostantinos Xenopoulos. The latter is from Greece and teaches iconography at the Ecclesiastical Academy on Mount Athos.
Antonio works from his own studio "Santo Mandylion", named that way "because seeing God's face is the deepest wish of man, and that linen cloth was Christ's gift to enable us to anticipate that Holy Vision."

DIRKS, Delphia
Delphia Dirks' interest in iconography got started in the early 1980's when she was living in the Soviet Union where her husband was serving at the U.S. Embassy. While until then she had been painting in oil and watercolor, she now undertook to study both the acrylic and egg tempera methods, mostly with Russian iconographers in both Russia and the US. She exhibits at churches and in shows, and works mainly by commission, preferring the Byzantine Style.

Icon : The Crucifixion, San Damiano Crucifix
The San Damiano Crucifix became known through Saint Francis of Assisi (1182 - 1226), Italy. St. Francis often prayed in the small dilapidated church of San Damiano just outside the walls of the city of Assisi. In the church was a painted, Byzantine Crucifix. One day while in prayer, St. Frances heard the image of Christ speak to him, saying "rebuild my church." Francis took this message literally and did rebuild the church which is still run by Franciscan Friars today.

DORMITION SKETE ICONS
Dormition Skete may well be the only Monastery in North America dedicated to the painting of traditional icons. It offers panel icons and frescos, both of them painted through the hand of Archbishop Gregory with the aid of the monks of Dormition Skete. Archbishop Gregory has been painting in the Greek Cretan style for over forty-two years, inspired by the great iconographers of ancient times, including the noted (contemporary) iconographer Photios Kontoglou.
The Monastery also offers over four hundred mounted icons for sale through their web site, with a library of several thousands of themes from which to draw an image if required. Mounted icons are produced in the monastery, in sizes up to approximately six feet by four feet, with printing equipment that utilizes actual pigments rather than inks. The quality of both hand painted icons and mounted photographs is excellent.

Gashev, Georgy
Georgy Victorovich Gashev’s (b. 1960) icons stand out in the St Petersburg icon-painting tradition of the last decade of the 20th century.
For Georgy Gashev icon-painting is inseparable from the Orthodox Church. His schooling at the Academy of Industrial Design, his traineeship in Moscow (St Daniel’s Monastery) and Pskov (Pskov-Pechora monastery) have contributed to the making of his talent for icon-painting. The encounter with Father Zenon, the world famous icon-painter, decided his fate and helped realize his vocation. Not only was Gashev spiritually guided by Father Zenon but he also worked by his side partaking of the wisdom of the ancient and beautiful art.
Gashev’s icons belong to many churches of Russia: to St Daniel’s Monastery, Valaam Island, The Trinity – St Sergius, Pustyn (Hermitage), The Church of Our Savior in Moscow, Pskov-Pechora monastery and many others. St Petersburg boasts his works in the Church of Transfiguration of Our Lord, the Church of the Assumption at the monastery at Optina Pustyn (Optina Hermitage), etc.
He has been a regular participant at “The Orthodox Russia” exhibitions (since 1996). His icons are well-known in Finland, Germany and other countries. They belong not only to Orthodox churches but also they are much sought after by many a connoisseur in Russia and outside.

HART Aidan    (Updated: 28 June 2009)
Born in England in 1957, Aidan Hart has been a professional icon and fresco painter for over twenty years. He also is a theologian and wood carver.
He studied iconography in the UK and during three years in Thessalonica and Mount Athos. He has had works commissioned by HRH The Prince of Wales, and by many churches and individuals around the world.
He is a visiting tutor for The Prince’s School of Traditional Art, London, and runs icon courses as well. He has lectured widely, has published numerous articles, written a number of books*, and has curated several exhibitions of old and new icons. Clearly, Aidan Hart is a very talented man, and definitely a Master Iconographer of our time. (Click this link for more details.)
Of particular interest to the reader would be Aidan Hart's great knowledge and understanding of iconography in its historical context and his interpretation thereof as it applies to Orthodox iconography today. In an excellent article titled Iconographers of the Twentieth Century (PDF), written in 2000, he provides an overview of essential elements, without getting bogged down into details : a "must read" for every iconographer conscious of the importance of maintaining the Canon, while going beyond merely making copies of 12th-century icons.

ATTENTION PLEASE !!    (Added: 28 June 2009)
A NEW DIPLOMA COURSE IN ICON AND WALL PAINTING
In October 2009, Aidan is due to begin teaching a four year Diploma course in icon and wall painting. As far as known, this will be the only course of its type in the English speaking world, where the skills and theology of icon and wall painting will be taught systematically over a period of time. This gives greater scope to enter more deeply into the tradition than can be provided by attendance at isolated five day courses.

WHAT THE COURSE OFFERS
The four year part-time course will cover the techniques of egg tempera icon panel painting and wall painting, placing these in the context of the theology of the icon. The course will be taught primarily by Aidan, along with some visiting tutors.
Areas to be studied include: Pigment and panel preparation; techniques of egg tempera icon painting and manuscript illumination; theology of the icon; studies of icon masterpieces; the relationship of iconography and church architecture and worship; techniques of secco and fresco wall painting; introduction to mosaic technique; business skills.

There are twelve places for students to study part-time for the four year duration of the course. Students who successfully complete the programme will be awarded a Diploma in Iconography by the Prince's School of Traditional Art (PSTA). PSTA is also running a range of five-day courses in London which include various liturgical arts.
- See the webpage below [ LINK ] for details -

WHEN
The course will run for four years. Classes will take place usually on the last Monday and Tuesday of each month (except August), and run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an evening lecture/discussion on Monday nights. If the last Monday and Tuesday fall on a public-holiday the classes will be rescheduled. Classes are due to begin on 26th October 2009. Students will be expected to do at least two hours of additional study a week.

WHERE
The classes will be held in the beautiful premises of The Holy Trinity Centre, Church Road, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY3 9HF.

COST
The fee per year is £1,500 and is paid in advance of the course starting each academic year. The fee includes tuition, lunch, Monday evening meal, and refreshments. Accommodation is the responsibility of the student, but a list of bed and breakfasts will be provided (average price £35 per person per night). Students are expected to provide all materials at a cost of around £100 per year.

HOW TO APPLY
To obtain an application form please contact Margot Stone at The Prince's School of Traditional Arts in London.

HERITAGE STUDIO
Under the leadership of Alexander Sofinsky, Heritage Studio has developed into a successful creative organization of scientists, engineers and artists, each of which is a professional in his area of expertise. They are unique in that they supply wood carved low-relief icons to the blind who can 'read' the icons by tactile perception. While it was never clear to me whether wood carved icons were fully recognized icons or not, there seems to be no doubt that they are, that in fact they have been for a long time. Moreover, there was a tradition in many temples and monasteries of Russia to place under a 'picture-icon' its reduced relief copy. This tradition is still alive today in the monasteries of the Holy Mount Athos in Greece.

Icon: Christ Angel of theHoly Silence by Geert Hüsstege, 2002
The icon of Christ Angel of Holy Silence finds its origin in a Russian icon of around 1800. The icon calls us to silence, to become immersed in silence. This really is the call of each and every icon. We are called to silence in order to meditate, to be able to listen to the Lord speaking to us and to be able to speak to Him. The icon englobes elements of 'Sofia' (Wisdom), 'Emmanuel' (Jesus, God, being with us) and 'Logos' (the Word of God eternal). The Angel of Holy Silence is the symbolic representation of both Christ and Sofia, the Wisdom or Silence of the Suffering Servant announcing the Truth without making noise : Jesus did not answer to any of the accusations made against Him, to the amazement of Pilate (Matthew 27, 12-14).

IANOVSKAIA Tatiana   Toronto, Ontario
Utterly amazing ! At times, the answer I get from an iconographer when asking what it was that took them to start painting icons, is utterly amazing. Here is the answer Tatiana Ianovskaia gave me : When I was 11 years old, I found the "icon of Christ not made with hands" in the garbage of the yard of the building we lived in" !
The artist graduated from the Art College in Moscow in 1981, following which she restored icons in the Theophany Cathedral at Yelohovo, Moscow, and murals in the Church of Dmitrii Solunskii, near Moscow. In 1982, when working as an iconographer in the Icon studio of the Moscow Patriarch, she was introduced to the technique of using egg tempera to paint icons. From 1983-1985 she was an iconographer in Saint Danilov's Monastery (click link to read about the monastery's background) where the famous iconographer Fr. Teodor Zinon was her teacher !
In the period that followed, until her immigration in Canada in 1998, with a husband and two children, she painted icons mostly for private collections in Moscow, Israel and France. Since then (1998-2005), the artist works for the Archdiocese of Canada in the Bishop's Chapel of St. Silouan the Athonite, where she made all icons in the Iconostasis of the Chapel, including the Royal Doors. During that same period she made several more icons elsewhere for Chapels, Churches and private collections.

Handpainted Orthodox Christian Icons

St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, Dallas, Texas
When it was first seen, the site offered a range of Handpainted Orthodox Christian Icons for sale at a reasonable price. I cannot remember exactly, but presumably all of the 180 beautiful icon images that were shown at that time were the ones offered for sale. After the site was reorganized, the images were no longer there. At the present time, the site seems to be a medium for various individual iconographers to make themselves known and offer their icons for sale. JACKSON Nancy
Working under the name Timshel Studio, located in Vallejo, CA, Nancy Jackson is a professional iconographer and master Gobelin-Aubusson tapestry artist. For as long as she can remember she has sought icons as a place where the relationship with God can be experienced. Since the early 1980’s, she studied Greek and Russian iconography in books and exhibitions until, in 1988, the desire was born to paint icons. Finding a teacher was difficult though. In 1999, she studied with Aleksandr Karon of San Francisco. Next, she studied Russian iconography with Christopher Gosey. He introduced her to Xenia Pokrovsky, who offered to instruct her. In May 2000, she returned to the East Coast and worked with Xenia in a highly intensive study period, during which she was launched an egg-tempera Russian iconographer. She has continued to pursue iconography with deep passion, to this very day.
At least 50% of her studio time is taken up by iconography - Russian, Ethiopian or Coptic. She also does private commisions for Gobelin tapestry icons, has embroidered numerous baptismal napkins with sacred motifs (used as symbolic napkins to wipe the child’s head), and occasionally does traditional artwork in various paint and drawing media. She teaches Russian, Ethiopian and Coptic iconography and Gobelin-Aubusson tapestry extensively and exhibits widely through the US and occasionally in Europe.
Her tapestry and iconography work can be seen at Timshel Sudio,

JOVANOVIC, Biljana
Born in Belgrade, Serbia, Biljana Jovanovic presently lives in Athens, Greece, and works in both Athens and Belgrade. Her husband is a Priest of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Athens and a great theological and iconographical critic of Biljana's work.
When I saw the artist's icons, I was a little surprised. I could see that they were made by a skilled professional and I liked the images and colors. But I wasn't sure what type of icons these were. I wrote to Biljana asking for more information. In her reply, she indicated that she adopted an early Christian style of iconography. Hear (read) Biljana explain it...
"Yes, my icons are different from most contemporary icons we see nowadays in icon exhibitions and on the Internet. Yet, they have all canonical features of orthodox icons, including inverse perspective, light without shadows, aureoles, letters... One reason that they are different is that I take some very rare examples of icons from early Christian art as prototypes because early Christian art is my favorite period (of Christian art). This sets them apart from the majority of today's icons that are made by icon painters whose prototypes are mostly examples of iconography of the 13th - 15th centuries.
Another reason that my icons are different is the fact that I do not copy icons. During painting I look at the old examples that are my prototypes, but I don't aim at making identical copies. Because making identical copies is what is done in the 20th century, but it is not what was done in the golden period of byzantine painting.
The only icon I make without prototype is the icon of the prophet Noah but just with regard to one aspect. As you know, the icon of St. Noah is presented by a Saint with an empty ark. That was very strange to me because historically the ark was not empty. From an eschatological point of view it was not empty either because according to the Church Fathers the ark represented the Church which aims at the salvation of all of creation. So I concluded that the representation of the old painters was insatisfactory from a theological and from an iconographical point of view.
Following it, I had many conversations on the subject with priests and professors of theological studies in both Serbia and here in Greece, where I presently live. All of them said that the right theological and iconographical model of that icon is an icon of the ark with animals. I subsequently received the blessing to paint the icon of the prophet Noah this way, hence I 'put' animals in the ark. When the icon was finished it was warmly received in the Serbian Orthodox Church as well as here in Athens, together with all my other icons."

KALININ, Anna
Anna Kalinin received her first drawing lessons from her maternal grandmother, Olga Turzhanov. Next, she studied art formally in a specialized art school. At 16 she began her training as an iconographer, working as an apprentice with Xenya Pokrovsky, a well-known Moscow-bred iconographer, currently working in Boston, USA. Anna went on to earn a degree in restoration from the Stroganov Art School of Moscow, all the while continuing her work with Ksenya Pokrovsky. Thus, Anna became a qualified restorer and iconographer: today she works with egg tempera, oils and acrylics. Anna is also a qualified fresco painter, as well as a Florentine- and Byzantine-style mosaic maker.
The artist was fortunate to work with many well-known artists and restorers: she was taught restoring from professor Ovchinnikov, a world-famous restorer; fresco painting from professor Filatov, and gilding techniques from Father Zenon (Zinon). Among the multitude of talented artists that flourish in post-perestroika Russia today, Anna Kalinin is unique in her flexibility - she masters different styles, ranging from Byzantine, to Russian, to Florentine.
Today, her work can be found in Moscow, in the Christ the Saviour Cathedral in Moscow ; in monasteries such as Optina and Valaam ; in Bologna, Italy ; in Australia ; in the U.S.A. (Ohio, and New York) ; and in many other places around the world. Recently, Anna completed a large iconostasis for the Trinity church in Tsaritsono (a Moscow suburb), consecrated in honour of the Millenium of Christianity in Russia.

KNOWLES, Ian    'Elias Icons'
Here is what the iconographer says of himself :
"I am an English iconographer. I studied under Fr. Egon Sendler in France and did an apprenticeship with Aidan Hart in England. I am a Roman Catholic, with a degree in Theology from Oxford University, a diploma in Pastoral Theology from Heythrop College London, and experience in the refurbishment of churches. I mainly paint panel icons, but have some experience of fresco."
Website : http://www.eliasicons.co.uk ==> 6 icons
The site shows six icons, the themes of which seem to have been expertly chosen and certainly have been expertly explained. I find it interesting how the artist has painted the face of the Theotokos to resemble the face of Our Lady of Philermos, as painted by a Greek painter (16th c.) and as painted by the contemporary Czech iconographer Makarius Tauc. Not heard of often, but quite interesting, nevertheless, is the popular belief that the images shown on icons (of Our Lady of Philermos) strongly resemble the face of the Holy Virgin during her life on earth.

KUSKOVA, Elena
Elena (Yelena) Kuskova has been painting icons for over 20 years, during which time she made three hundred icons. One of her icons has been acquired by Moscow's Tretyakov Gallery and is now part of its permanent collection *(icon to the left, and text further down)*. Various churches also own her works.

The Austrian Chancellor Paints a Russian Icon
A few years ago, Yelana Kuskova befriended Austria's Federal Chancellor Wolfgang Shuessel. Besides a well known career as a politician, Mr. Shuessel is an accomplished musician and icon painter. More recently, at the end of January (this year) Mr. Shuessel made an official visit to Russia and met of course with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin. In one of the rooms of the Creative Union of Russian Artists, amidst beautiful icons, a work place complete with easels, paints, etc. was set up for the Austrian Chancellor. Under Yelena Kuskova's guidance, Mr. Shuessel worked there nonstop for two days to make his version of "Elijah's Ascent into Heaven in a Whirlwind", allowing himself only very short breaks for cups of coffee. This capacity for work amazed the Russian painters while his artistic accomplishment was no less admired.

KUSOV Ivan
Kusov Ivan Alexandrovich was born in 1958. In 1982 he graduated from the department "Interior and equipment" (speciality — furniture design) of the Institute named after V.I.Mukhina. The skills of icon-painter he gained under the guidance of Golubev at the icon-painting workshop belonging to the Ecclesiastic Academy and the Seminary of St.Petersburg. He follows the style of the art of Ancient Rus and Byzantine and is especially loyal to Moscow school: to icon-painting of Andrei Rublyov and Dionysius, the peculiarity of their colouring and eurhythmy. Kusov painted icons for icon-stands in the church of the Khazan icon of the Mother of God and the church of Koimeis (St.Petersburg. 1998-2002). His icons are kept in temples and private collections in Russia (St.Petersburg, Novgorod), Finland, France.

Icon: The Dormition of the Mother of God (The Assumption of the Mother of God) *
Email: info@markellstudios.com
----------------------------------------------------------
* Explanation of the icon - by Nicholas Markell.
The belief in the bodily assumption of the Mother of God is common to East and West, Orthodox and Catholic, though each has a distinct understanding of the event. From the earliest times, the church commonly held that after the falling asleep of the Blessed Virgin in the presence of the Apostles, upon the request of St. Thomas (who arrived later), Mary’s cave tomb was opened and found empty. Before her assumption, The Mother of God gives St. Thomas her girdle (belt).
The story of the Assumption is a “parallel” account to the Resurrection event in many ways. While the other Apostles doubt her assumption, it was only upon the witness of St. Thomas that they all visit the cave tomb to find it empty and thus, believe.
The Dormition icon of St. Andrei Rublev who uncommonly imaged The Mother of God being assumed body and soul in pure white robes influenced the colors of this icon. Moreover, this Assumption icon shows the waters of the valley flowing anew, echoing an ancient title of The Mother of God–“Life Giving Spring.” This is because the ancient church believed the Blessed Virgin was buried in the Kidron Valley, just outside the walls of Jerusalem. Kidron means, “stream.” The Kidron Valley possessed a natural spring called the Gihon, which means, “to gush forth”. In Sacred Scripture, the Gihon Spring is named as one of the four rivers of Eden, a symbol associated with paradise.

Much of Helen's work has been overseen by the critical eye of the Orthodox priest and writer, Fr Andrew Phillips, who particularly encourages new icons to be painted of the early saints of East Anglia and Britain. Helen also is passing on her knowledge and experiece by teaching groups and individuals the medieval techniques necessary to icon painting : gesso preparation, gilding and the particular use of egg tempera.

Her website is nice - http://www.elenisicons.co.uk/ - and her interesting icons are masterworks! - (1) - The Resurrection "Christ of the Isles" with patronal Saints :
St Edmund, St Andrew, St David and St Patrick - (2) - Christ the Savior, after the original 13th c. icon of the Chilandar Monastery, Mount Athos, Greece. N.B. The Chilandar Monastery is considered the most valuable spiritual treasure of Serbia (Serbian Orthodox Church).

MERHE, Gebre
Gebre Merhe, 35, was born and raised in the ancient Holy City and former Imperial capital city of Aksum, Ethiopia. He presently resides in Addis Ababa where he has a small studio and access to better markets for his work. He learned iconography as it has been passed down for generations in his family in Aksum. He still works in collaboration with his family who provide him with the wood for his paintings. The wood comes from the mountains surrounding Aksum where the trees are felled by hand ax and planed and dried in preparation for the hand carving of the icon's exterior. The finished carved pieces are sent to Gebre in Addis for painting and finishing

PALEKH ICONOSTASES
The Studio "Palekhskiy Iconostases", based in Palekh, was founded in August 1996 by Palekh artists Vlez'ko, Anatoliy and Fedorov Yuri. They started from scratch, no experience and no capital. The most important elements were their great desire and faith.
In the beginning there were only 6 people. They worked 18-hour days. What helped them was enthusiasm, responsibility and good working relationships. The first two iconostases were made in the garage of their own homes. Materials were gathered piece by piece.
Gradually the workshop was enlarged: masters came, working accomodations were constructed, equipment and tools were acquired. Today over 70 people work and create in the workshop. They are professionals in their own area: architects, iconographers, engravers, designers, etc.
The iconostases are huge, the greatest width of one iconostasis being 15 meter, and the greatest height of (another) iconostasis being 12 meter.

POKROVSKY Xenia (Izograph Studio)
Xenia Pokrovsky is a founder and board member of "IZOGRAPH", the Russian society of iconographers, and is without doubt one of the most interesting and authoritative icon painters today. More about this can be found in the article "Xenia Pokrovsky" http://www.izograph.com/xenia.htm.
She is renowned for the extraordinarily high level of skill she acquired as an international restorer of 14th-16th century icons now held in private collections. She also developed her own original and productive approach of teaching and tutoring iconography and always has students from different Christian backgrounds. Many icon masters learned their art from her. See Six Days of Creation - Xenia Pokrovsky
http://www.standrewlexington.org/icon_workshop/xenia.htm
Also see Schedule of Iconography Workshops for the current year (2006) on "Hexaemeron" (Six Days of Creation) http://www.hexaemeron.org/.
The artist's website [ http://www.izograph.com ] is well laid out and well presented. It has very good images and additional information. At the time around Christmas (2003), when this site was added, the triptych of the Nativity got my attention because the many different icons assembled in it gave a nice and more complete picture of all the events surrounding Christ's birth.

Master Iconographer Xenia Pokrovsky - Biography
Xenia Pokrovsky gave up her career as a biophysicist in the late 1960s to learn the ancient art of icon painting. These were not welcoming times for such a decision. Stalin had realized, two decades earlier, the political advantage of halting the destruction of Russia’s religious art treasures that had been produced by a 1000 years of Orthodox Christianity. But the official ban on “making new icons” remained aggressively in force. Icon painting workshops in monasteries and craft centers were shut down. The practical knowledge and skill of icon painters, transferred orally from one generation to the next, had all but disappeared.
Without benefit of teachers and under the threat of prosecution, Xenia Pokrovsky applied her scientific discipline to learning the forbidden art. Beginning as a restorer Pokrovsky discovered many of the techniques that had preserved ancient Russian art for centuries in spite of vandalism and neglect. Eventually, this courageous mother of five formed a network of accomplices throughout the vast Soviet Union and became a leader of a clandestine movement that revived icon painting in Russia during the 1970s and 1980s. When Perestroika loosened the atheistic yoke on Russian society, Pokrovsky and her associates were recognized for their heroic work.
In the last decade and a half, Pokrovsky’s teaching has spread to North and South America, Australia and other parts of the world. Pokrovsky immigrated to the United States in 1991 and lives near Boston. Her 37 years of experience is helping to found an incipient American school of art inspired by the ancient Byzantine/Russian iconic form.

PORTER, Elizabeth (Betsy)
During the past several years, sacred icons in the Byzantine style have become the artist's primary art form. She hand-paints her icons in the traditional style using egg tempera paint and gold leaf on a wooden board covered with natural gesso. " This time-consuming, contemplative method can produce beautiful results, with subtle but glowing colors and delicate detail " she says. She also coordinates a series of informal iconography sessions or classes, usually two Sunday afternoons each month, at St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church, 500 DeHaro at Mariposa, San Francisco, California.

RENSEN, William     Icon Studio St. Willibrord
Born in The Netherlands (1974), William Rensen became fascinated with icons during a visit to the oecumenical monastery in Taizé, France (2003). where icons are being used in the daily prayers. Following a search for a teacher he started his first icon painting class in 2004 with Jessica Heijkoop (Deventer) who paints in the Russian tradition. Next, at an icon exhibition in the museum Catharijneconvent in Utrecht, he met Jan Verdonk, a professional icon painter in the Greek tradition, and started taking classes with him. With Jan Verdonk he learned a great deal about icons in general, and about the use of color and composition of icons in the Greek tradition and the Cretan School, in particular. He still takes classes with Jan Verdonk to improve his skills and learn new techniques.

RJANITCYNA, Svetlana
Svetlana Rjanitcyna was born in1967 in Moscow. From early childhood she liked to draw. She studied at the art school "Surikovskaya", where she had remarkable teachers, the now famous talented artists Andrijaka S.N. and Vishnjak M.V. They taught her to work with persistence and showed her the beauty of ancient Russian painting. When she left the school she was not a believer. She wanted to believe, but it was difficult for her. She was very happy when she understood: God exists and that is a reality. The artist is a follower of Alexander Sokolov, one of Russia's outstanding iconographers.

Father Sendler is a Jesuit priest, born in Silesia in 1923. (Silesia has a long history that can be traced back to the 1st century. SOKOLOV, Alexander      Moscow      Updated: 3 October 2006
Alexander Sokolov was born in Moscow in 1959. From 1972 to 1978 he studied at the High Art School of the Moscow Academy of Arts, and in 1982 he graduated from the Moscow Stroganov Art College, faculty of restoration. From 1982 to 1985 he worked at the Danilav Monastery in the Patriarch residence, during the revival of the Monastery. Today his works can be found in many churches of Russia, Japan, America, Poland, Germany, etc.
At the beginning of his art career A.Sokolov worked together with Fr. Zinon. But his painting style was forming independently from Fr. Zinon's conception. Says Svetlana Rjanitcyna*, one of his followers : "A. Sokolov favored the mixing of medieval styles and his personal features. Sokolov's sacred images are more substantial. They are filled with his own vision of spiritual reality. An icon face is in the center of his icons."
Today, Alexander Sokolov is one of the outstanding modern (contemporary) iconographers of Russia. He is not only a gifted iconographer but also a talented teacher. He founded the first school of iconography in Poland, he taught at St. Tikhon's University in Moscow, and he was a successful teacher of icon painting in Japan. His latest workshop was in St. Simon's Monastery. Many iconographers worked there side by side, learning both theory and practice. Says Svetlana Rjanitcyna : "Even though the workshop does no longer exist, it could be said of all of icon-painters who worked there, that they are very talented in applying the methodology of mixed styles."
Besides the traditional themes, he also paints icons around less frequently used themes such as 'Crossing the Red Sea' and ' Moses in front of the "Burning Bush" '.
His icon of the Virgin 'Inexhaustible Cup', painted for the Vyotsky Monastery in Serpukhov is worthy of special mention. Says Irina Yazykova** : "This icon became very popular among Russian people, not only because it heals alcoholism, but also because it is a creation of the heart and soul".

ST. PETERSBURG ACADEMY - Icons.teolog.ru
Icons shown on the website are the work of graduates and 4th year students of the icon-painting school at the St. Petersburg Spiritual Academy and Seminary.
Icons are written in accordance with the centuries-old church icon-painting canon. The course leaves room for creativity, thus icon painting is not reduced to slavish copying of ancient icons. As well, the iconographers are being taught how to restore icons, thereby working with real icons.
Once they understand the deeper spiritual and theological meaning of the icon, the students start writing icons, using many models, as well as their own artistic experience and understanding. Icons are written to order in all sizes from miniatures to ikonostasis. The work covers a wide spectrum of icon-painting styles including Byzantine, Greek, Moscow School, and others. Once completed the icons are sold.

Stalnov painted icons for the Seminary temple in Albano, for the church of Apostle Luke in Padua (Italy). Since 2002 he has been working at the painting of an orthodox chapel in Italy. A. V. Stalnov is one of the leading icon-painters of St. Petersburg.

Icon : In You rejoices, o Full of Grace, all Creation.
The (original) icon was made by Dionysius in Moscow ca. 1500, and presently is in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. It shows a throne inside a large aureole with three circles. The triple aureole represents the Holy Trinity. The throne with the Mother of God and her Son is at the center or heart of the Divinity, because the love of God is at the source of the Incarnation. That is where one needs to start reading the icon.

TSOKAS, Panagiotis       'Religious Greek And Russian Icons'
The workshop, by the artist named "Original Byzantine Art", offers 'exact' copies of old hagiographies which were painted by the best Greek painters of the 15th, 16th and 17th century. The technique they use is said to be 'similar' to the oldfashioned way of making an icon: egg tempera and gold leaf on cracked canvas placed on old wood. This procedure ('working out') gives the image the look ('sense') of an old icon ('without removing or covering any parts of the painting'?). Every step of the procedure is carried out by hand. For over 15 years their workshop offers a great variety of themes from icons in Crete, Italy and Russia, selling them to shops in Greece and abroad.

VAN TAACK, Emilie       'The Orthodox Icon'       Very informative!
Emilie Van Taack was a pupil of Leonid Uspensky. She presently is in charge of an icon studio under the omophorion of Bishop Luka of Western Europe for the Serbian Patriarchate. The site has leads to many other sites. Most importantly, however, using clear language, the site explains the central role of the Orthodox Icon in the Orthodox Faith, as well as the role of the first French icons in the re-birth of Byzantine Iconography after WW II.
The icon to the left is an icon painted by Fr. Gregory Kroug. Fr. Gregory often worked with Leonid Uspensky. Both were Russians who lived in France and both played an important role in the process of recovering the roots (renaissance, re-birth) of Byzantine Iconography after WW II, and still ongoing today. Although they were Russians, they were nonetheless those who created the first French icons, just like the Byzantine iconographers who had established themselves in Russia created the first Russian icons. And, like the first Russian painters, they had been educated by (or in) Byzantine iconography. (Source: The Theological and Spiritual Foundations of the Return to the Icon.) Emilie's site brings all of above to the foreground.

Icon to the left : Mother of God Pelagonitissa - The Playing Child

What strikes me in the icon (to the left) is the face of the Virgin, the expression on the face and the nose. Because they resemble the face, expression and nose of the Mother of God of Philermos  (1)  (2)  (3)  (4). And it seems there exists quite an interest in that icon (of Our Lady of Philermos), which stems from the popular belief that the image shown in the icon strongly resembles the face of the Holy Virgin during her life on earth.

Zavaliy has a characteristically scientific approach to her study of the various schools of old Russian icon painting (the Novgorod, Pskov, Moscow, and Yaroslav schools). Her works are a synthesis of the highest achievements of each school. Her works are replete with a spiritual quality.
While Zavaliy is very familiar with orthodox iconography, she also creates her own images, including those depicting newly canonized saints. It is crucial for the artist / icon painter to adhere to the old Russian painting techniques. All of Zavaliy’s works are done on primed wooden boards, using an egg yolk tempera technique. Only natural pigments are used to create colors, as was the typical practice of old Russian icon painters. These colors include cinnamon, lazurite, various shades of ochre, etc. Even the gilding process is done according to old Russian traditions. The completed icons are covered with drying oil which makes the vivid paint colors more pronounced and protects the painting from the elements (humidity, cold etc.)
All of Yelena Zavaliy’s works are a testament of the enduring traditions of the art of old Russia. They demonstrate that efforts to follow these traditions, ones that are very alive today, can be very fruitful. The distinguishing characteristics of her works are the spirituality of a person devoted to the Orthodox faith, a creative talent, and a high level of professionalism.

Zhdanova, Valentina
Valentina Tikhonovna Zhdanova (b. 1947) is an artist and icon painter. She is a graduate of Art and Graphic School (1966) and subsequently the Herzen Institute (1975). She first gained experience in a course on icon painting at the Ecclesiastical Academy (Leningrad). Byzantine icons, frescos, and mosaics and Russian painting of the 12th-19th centuries is a constant source for the artist’s creative development. Of particular interest to Zhdanova is the Serbian school of icon painting.
Throughout the nineties, she was actively involved in both teaching as well as artistic endeavors. Zhdanova was awarded the Orders of Mary Magdalene, first and second degrees, for a series of icons and for her achievements in teaching at the Andrey Rublev School (Belsk, Poland). Many of the students who attended this school have continued their careers as icon painters in Poland and have added new dimensions to the artistic traditions which they mastered under Zhdanova’s instruction.
Today, Zhdanova’s icons adorn many churches of St. Petersburg, including the Chapel of the New Martyrs and St. Vladimir’s Cathedral.
In addition to her own icon painting, Zhdanova dedicates much of her time to teaching. She is one of the leader teachers at the school of icon painting at the Spiritual Academy of Saint Petersburg. Her artistic achievements have garnered her recognition as one of the most prominent modern icon painters of Russia’s "Northern capital".

ZINON Fr. Teodor
A native of the Pskov region, Father Zinon is the leading icon painter in Russia. His splendid frescoes decorate the Saint Daniel's monastery in Moscow where the patriarchate is located.
Says Svetlana Rjanitcyna (see article in her biography)* : "In the 1970s and in the beginning of the 1980s Fr. Zinon worked in an Old Russian manner. But his icons were not interesting at that time, although some among us praised his skill. The style of his icons changed when Fr. Zinon began painting in the Byzantine tradition of the XIth-XIIth centuries. They became filled with content. Fr. Zinon's icons started to show resemblance with the icons as they looked like before the schism, before the split into Catholics and Orthodox. He set up an icon painting school like it used to be in Pskov. Now he has many followers. The most talented among them are Fr. Amvrosyi Gorelov, Fr. Andrey Davydov, Andrey Bubnov and there are others."

Web presence : For some reason Fr. Zinon's website can no longer be accessed. Inactive link :

Message for Firefox (FF) users
Initially, the page was designed for IE only. Consequently display in FF was poor. SortTable functioning in FF was poor also. Since then, FF improved and the site's webmaster learned to format using 'CSS' and make layouts using 'DIVS'. To such extent that page display in FF now is virtually identical to that in IE.
SortTable functioning in IE has remained excellent and precise, and now is good in FF also. Not perfect, but good. However, since FF design rules are stricter than those in IE, and SortTable design is that of a 3rd party done several years ago for IE, SortTable inaccuracies in FF therefore are likely to remain on this page. All to say that it still is best to use the SortTable in IE.
