About Mount Athos
Mount Athos is the easternmost peninsula of

(map1). It is a
self-governed part of the Greek state, subject to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with regard to
its political affairs and to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople with regard to its
religious affairs. It is divided into twenty self-governed territories, one for each of its twenty

for more than 1000 years and has the largest collection of Christian art in the world.
