About Mount Athos

Mount Athos is the easternmost peninsula of three (peninsulas) in the south of Hellenic Macedonia (map1). It is a self-governed part of the Greek state, subject to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with regard to its political affairs and to the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople with regard to its religious affairs. It is divided into twenty self-governed territories, one for each of its twenty monasteries (map2-interactive) and (map3). Mount Athos has been the heart of Christian Orthodox monastic life for more than 1000 years and has the largest collection of Christian art in the world.
