A word from the author

Surprisingly, I had never paid any attention to icons whatsoever. That changed following a visit to Lourdes, France, in June 1991. Upon my return to Canada, I started to collect icon reproductions and never stopped. Somehow it gave me peace and joy. It still does. Making these pages available to a wider audience makes for even greater joy.

If you ask me why I do this, as I mentioned earlier, it gives me peace. Every time when I am working with icons peace comes over me and I am being filled with joy. Slowly I came to understand that I had lost peace, that for a long time I had been looking for it in the wrong places. Nowadays, maintaining peace and serenity is my top priority. Yet working with icons isn't something I chose to do, but rather something Someone invited me to do, back in June 1991, and somehow I accepted.

One of the things that working with icons is teaching me is the great veneration of the Holy Virgin by the Orthodox Church, so eloquently expressed by the Russian theologian Serge Boulgakov; it never fails to warm my heart. I have reprinted that text on a separate page together with an article by the contemporary iconographer Nicholas Papas in which he explains the prominence of the Mother of God Platytera (More Spacious than the Heavens) in an Orthodox Church. That article also is very beautiful. Click these lines to view the icon of the Mother of God Platytera and read both articles on the page "The Veneration of the Holy Virgin Mary by the Orthodox Church".

Thank you for stopping by. And enjoy your visit!
