| Preamble Having secretly received the command, the Archangel hastened to Joseph's abode (house) and spoke to the Holy Virgin. He Who bowed the Heavens with His descending, is wholly contained, yet unchanged in You. And seeing Him taking the likeness of a servant in your womb, I stand in amazement and cry unto you: Rejoice, O Unwedded Bride [3 times]. |
| Kontakion 1 Unto you, O Theotokos, invincible Champion, your City [or "we your people"], in thanksgiving ascribes the victory for the deliverance from sufferings. And having your might unassailable, free us from all dangers, so that we may cry unto you: Rejoice, O Unwedded Bride. Eikos 1 The Archangel was sent from Heaven to cry 'Rejoice!' to the Theotokos. And beholding You, O Lord, taking bodily form, he stood in awe, and with his bodiless voice he cried aloud to her such things as these: |

Les Mages ont vu l'astre qui conduit à Dieu.
Marchant à sa clarté comme on saisit un flambeau, ils ont
trouvé la Lumière véritable. Tout proches de Celui que
personne n'a jamais vu, ils acclament sa Mère : Alléluia,

Quand nous contemplons cet enfantement inhabituel nous
devenons étrangers à notre monde habituel et notre esprit se

Le Verbe que rien ne contient a pris chair dans notre condition humaine sans cesser d'être Dieu. En venant habiter le monde d'en-bas, il n'a pas quitté pour autant les réalités d'en-haut, mais il est descendu tout entier dans le sein d'une Vierge qu'il a habitée de sa divinité : |

Music  The chant you may be hearing when the

HOLY MOTHER OF GOD IN HONOR OF HER ‘PANTANESSA’
MIRACULOUS ICON . It is chanted by the Moscow Churches’ Choir of
Singers, Conductor: Anatoly Kuleshov. The 1.08Mb sample is the Troparion
«Through the joy-creating image of the most venerated Mother of
God…» (tone four). As mentioned, the Pantanessa icon (shown to the

The sample allows you to hear the alternating chant of Kontakion and Eikos, and the chanting of the lines of praise in groups of four. The English and French words of the strophes of the Akathist Hymn shown above are equivalent to the Russian words of the chant.
