Eiad Touma - Biography
Eiad was born in 1979 in Aleppo, Syria, and obtained a BA in Economics in 2006. Eiad's passion for icons started in high school when he tried making his first icon. Following it, he went to Balamand monastery, Lebanon, and took a course in drawing sketches. Next, during a period of self study that lasted about 3 years, he developed his icon-pencil drawing technique using the Cretan school (style) while simultaneously working on color basics. Eiad then studied again with Brother Sabba, now Abbot of the Hamatoura monastery, Lebanon. (Br. Sabba also was his teacher when he studied at Balamand, mentioned above -- Br. Sabba studied there to become a monk.) It was at Hamatoura that Eiad learned painting in the Macedonian style. He also developed there his interest in miniatures. Eiad studied at Hamatoura during several years, alternating between taking courses and having prolonged periods of self study. He is presently working towards a degree in Middle East theology through a program phased over several years. Eiad established his own studio in 2004 and paints his icons using egg tempera on wood.
