Vologda The quiet beauty of the
city that was intended to become the Northern Russian capital can disarm and conquer the heart of
any. If you are sophisticated, or have a 'on the run futuristic personality', perhaps you will
experience the city differently. But if you are willing to open the eyes and ears of the innermost
self, Vologda will keep a part of you heart indefinitely. What is it that makes this city special?
Is it the formidable fortresses of its monasteries and Kremlin? Is it the quiet beauty of its
sleepy wooden streets? Is it the ever cold summer cathedral with its interior
completely covered with frescoes? God knows. Few come for a visit, even fewer ever come back. But
if you have ears to hear and eyes to see, once again your heart will be split and a little piece of
it will forever belong to Russia's Vologda.
Due to the remote location of the Ferapontov
Monastery Dionysius' frescoes were not frequently overpainted; for this reason they are among the
best preserved frescoes in their original location (the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral) in all of
Russia. Click the following links for additional documentation on Vologda and region:
