St. Petersburg Russia's
"Venice of the North" on the Neva River with its many canals radiating across the center of the
city. Although primarily a pastel Baroque architectural ensemble founded by Peter I in the early
18th century, the city of "White Nights" also has many churches that have been recently restored
with icons by contemporary St. Petersburg masters. As well, the city hosts major icon collections
in the State Russian
Museum and in the
Hermitage
Museum.
