Novgorod
This "New Town" is in reality one of the oldest recorded settlements in Russia and for centuries featured one of the most important iconographic styles in Russia. Many of these icons are still to be found in the large and newly-restored museum. "Yaroslav's Court" on the banks of the River Volhkov includes a number of the many medieval churches in the community that have been resurrected from the widespread destruction of World War II. Several important frescoes by Theophan the Greek have become available for viewing again at the Novgorod-style Church of the Transfiguration.
