Russia's City of
Churches embraces hundreds of cathedrals and neighborhood churches dating back to the 14th century
and dominated by the imposing and recently re-built Christ Saviour Cathedral. The unique and
coloful multi-domed St. Basil's on Red Square stands next to the red-brick walls and tower gates of
the Kremlin, which boasts its own collection of historical churches, including the Cathedral of the
Annunciation with its iconostasis executed by Theophan the Greek and Andrei Rublev and frescoes by
master Dionysii. The premier collection of Russian icons resides in Moscow's Tretyakov
Gallery.
