| NOTE The icon shows the Mother of God with two Archangels. According to several sources this icon dates back to the 4th century (Come and See, OCA). This would make it the oldest icon we know. According to Popova, Smirnova, Cortesi (1997), however, the strong expression of the eyes and the majestic bodily features are typical of the Georgian style of the 8th and 9th century. Top of Page |
