Cup About ten years ago I met the artist and his wife, an artist in her own right of traditional paintings, at his icon exhibition in Montreal, on the last leg of his trip from Russia to the USA and Canada, just before their return. I can still remember Alexander telling me that the icon has become very popular among Russians not only because it is healing many alcoholics from their obsession with alcohol but also because the icon is a creation of body and soul. The theme of the icon is well known in Russia, but Alexander's rendition is particularly beautiful. Also see the icon by Arlene Tilghman on the site of Come and See where it is written that the icon is particularly powerful to break the bonds of alcoholism and other addictions. Alexander Sokolov is an eminent contemporary iconographer. Born in 1959 in Moscow, he started painting icons when iconography was prohibited. During the Soviet years an icon was allowed to exist only as a masterwork of ancient Russian art, as a museum piece, as an art object that needed to be restored or examined, but never as a holy image for the purpose of veneration or prayer. Today, Alexander Sokolov is a recognized Master Iconographer. His works decorate many churches in Russia, Japan, the USA, Poland, Germany, etc. The creation of an icon fosters progressive spiritual growth in the iconographer resulting in an important impact on his soul. Je me souviens encore lorsque Alexancre me disait que l'icône est devenue très populaire parmi les Russes non seulement parce qu'elle guérit l'alcoolisme, mais aussi parce qu'elle est une création du cœur et de l'âme.
