| NOTES The Chilandar Monastery is located on Mount Athos: see Chilandar Miracles, the website of the Monastery of Chilandar, the most valuable spiritual treasury of the Serbian people http://www.sv-luka.org/Chilandar/index.htm The icon of Christ, God-man, is the graphical expression of the dogma of Chalcedon. The icon represents the incarnated divine person, the Son of God who became Son of man, consubstantial with the Father through his divinity, consubstantial with us through his humanity. 'Consubstantial'. What a difficult word that was the first time I read it. This single word, however, means that the Son of God is as fully God as God is, and as fully man as man is. He possesses those two natures, at the same time, all the time. Situated on a peninsula in the North East of Greece, Mount Athos is a self-governed part of the Greek state, and has been the heart of Christian Orthodox monastic life for more than 1000 years. As well, it has the largest collection of Christian art in the world. Also see Icons of the Holy Mount Athos http://www.ec-patr.gr/pic_athos/ Top of Page
