The Transfiguration of the
Lord (Mt Chapter 17)
Habitually, the first icon painted by a new iconographer is the icon of the Transfiguration « to permit Christ to make the light of His inaccessable Glory shine in his heart, like he did for the apostles ». The presence of God, without cover, transfigured, is unsupportable for the disciples in their present humanity: « They can see and hear the incarnated Word, even when transfigured in glory, but they cannot yet contemplate the glory and hear the voice of the Kingdom without shaking and covering their eyes, unlike Moses and Elijah who can because they are no longer of this world. » The Transfiguration teaches us that there is only one and the same divine Light : the one that the apostles saw on Thabor, the one that purified soules are contemplating right now, and the one who is the very reality of the good to come..... the light that comes forth from Thabor, at the Transfiguration of the Lord, is the prelude of the Glory of Christ at the moment of his second coming. »

of the Transfiguration I never realized that the Transfiguration is a very revealing and significant event, not only for the apostles but also for us contemporaries. When viewing the icon of the Transfiguration it can be understood (as it has been said and as we believe), that in Jesus "the whole fulness of deity dwells bodily". But there literally is more to the event (and to the icon of the Transfiguration) than meets the eye. Why is Moses present? Hadn't he died over thousand years ago? And what about Elijah? He too had not been seen for many years. Had he really ascended to heaven in a chariot of fire, meaning that he had never died? Why were Elijah and Moses present in the first place? How come they could talk with Jesus while the apostles had to cover themselves and fell down overcome with fear? Those questions arise more easily when viewing the icon than when reading the Gospel. What the icon doesn't reveal is the voice coming out of the cloud saying "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!". In short, the icon inspired me to read up on the Transfiguration, on Elijah and on Moses.
